- Tallinja Card Holders will also benefit from free Barrakka Lift Service
Transport Malta announces another initiative that will enhance multimodality, reduce congestion in the Harbour area, improve air quality, and elevate the overall quality of life for residents. Starting Monday, January 15, 2024, the Harbour Ferry Service will be free of charge for all Tallinja card holders, a move aimed at promoting sustainable transportation options and fostering a greener environment.
The Harbour Ferry Services operates between Valletta, Sliema and the Three Cities. This measure mirrors the existing system employed on buses that was recently introduced. Personalized Tallinja Card Holders can simply tap their cards when boarding the ferry, granting them complimentary access to the harbour ferry service.
Additionally, Tallinja Card Holders will also benefit from complimentary use of the Barrakka Lift. Passengers tapping their Tallinja cards will receive a ticket granting them free access to the Barrakka lift, further facilitating seamless and cost-free travel experiences.
Mr. Jonathan Borg, CEO of Transport Malta, commented on the significance of this initiative, stating, "We are thrilled to introduce this initiative as a step towards promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly modes of transportation. By providing free access to the harbour ferry service for Tallinja card holders, we aim to encourage the use of public transportation, reduce the number of cars in the Harbour area, and ultimately contribute to a healthier and cleaner environment."
The harbour ferry service has been gaining popularity, with the 2023 passenger statistics showcasing its impact on connectivity between key locations:
Route | Passenger Count |
Valletta - Cottonera | 497,998 |
Valletta - Sliema | 760,385 |
Transport Malta believes that making the harbour ferry service free for Tallinja card holders will not only benefit the individual travellers but will also contribute to the overall well-being of the community and the environment.
