Other Ports

Port of Marsamxett

The Port of Marsamxett lies between Tigne Point and the North West side of the city of Valletta and is primarily a port dedicated for leisure boats.

There are alongside berths on the quay on the North East side by the old Quarantine Hospital. Further West on the opposite side of the inlet, small vessels and yachts berth stern to the quays. There are numerous submerged moorings and before selecting a berth, the Authority should be consulted.

North of the Port is bounded by Gzira and Sliema as far as Dragut Point and extends inland to Pieta' and Msida. It is generally more dedicated to leisure use than is Grand Harbour. In fact there are yacht marinas at Msida and Ta' Xbiex and tourist cruise boats operate from Sliema. Within the harbour and reached by a small bridge from Gzira, Manoel Island houses a yacht yard and the 18th century Fort Manoel.

Th Port of Marsamxett accommodate leisure boats and provide a wide choice of cruises and excursions such as the famous round Malta cruises operating from Sliema Ferries.

Port of Mgarr

Mgarr Harbour in Gozo (together with the corresponding Cirkewwa harbour in the north of Malta) is vital for the economic development of this second largest island in the Maltese archipelago. In view of its double insularity, Gozo has to bear the higher cost of transportation since manufacturing companies operating from this island have the cost of the international sea leg and the ferry service between Malta and Gozo. Similarly, the island’s insularity impacts the cost of passenger transport. In view of this, every effort is being made to establish better berthing facilities in order to allow direct access to limited but vital international trade and inter-island ferry services. The three main activities within the port of Mgarr are a mooring facility for fishing and locally owned boats, a yachting centre and berthing facilities for inter-island ferries.

Mgarr Harbour is protected by a breakwater extending NE and another extending SSW from the shore to form an E facing entrance. There is a commercial quay and ferry terminal with two Ro Ro berths in the SW part of the harbour. Pontoons extend from the shore around the remaining part of the harbour, with berths for fishing vessels on the W side and leisure craft to the N.

Mgarr Harbour also serves as a mooring station for fishing and locally-owned boats, and a yachting centre. Occasionally, the latter harbour is also used for the berthing of small cruise liners and cargo vessels.

Port of Cirkewwa

The Port of Cirkewwa is a ferry terminal comprising of a passenger-handling building with gangway connections to the ships for foot passengers; vehicular marshalling areas; parking and land transport facilities; access and circulation roadways and ancillary buildings.

Passenger and vehicle service is provided all the year-round between Mgarr Harbour (Gozo) and Cirkewwa (Malta) by Gozo Channel. This company offers a comprehensive RoRo Passenger service for foot passengers, car and car passengers as well as cargo vehicles, including hazardous cargo.

Port of St Paul's Bay

St Paul's Bay is also designated as a port in terms of the Ports and Shipping Act. This port is mainly used for the mooring of pleasure craft and fishing boats.
