Renewing your Driving Licence
How to Renew Your Driving Licence
About 8 to 12 weeks prior to the expiry of the driving licence, a Driving Licence Renewal Form is mailed together with a self-addressed envelope to enable you to use this when mailing back to Transport Malta.
A Driving Licence Medical Certification Form is also mailed together with the renewal form for persons holding a Category C, C1, D, D1 and for persons of 70 years of age and over.
If you hold a Driving Licence under more than one category, then the renewal fee of the Driving Licence will cover all the categories that a licence holder may possess, except for categories D, DE, D1, and D1E licence holders over 50 years of age.
In cases where more frequent re-assessment (as specified by the medical practitioner) is required, or those that need to be referred to TM Medical Team, these are dealt with separately by Transport Malta.
After checking of documents, any renewal forms that fail to meet the required criteria, for example, new address/surname written does not match the details on identity card, incorrect payments, missing medical certificate (if applicable) or unclear/scanned photos (photos must be taken with a clear background, no sunglasses or hats), then these are marked on system and a letter is sent to you together with the renewal form informing you of what is required to finalise your renewal.
Renewal forms with all the required documents are processed. Full driving licences may be renewed, against the fee of 80.00 for a maximum period of ten years, or in cases where the licence holder is 70 years or over, then the licences shall become renewable every five years. In this case the fee of 29.25 is collected. Initially a counterpart driving licence document is issued. The counterpart licence and the photocard are mailed at a later date. However, if the you do not receive the photocard within six weeks following the renewal of the licence, then you need to contact Transport Malta within 90 days from its renewal and another licence will be issued free of charge after the signing of a declaration confirming that you never received it.
You can renew a Driving Licence by filling the renewal form and sending it by post using the provided self addressed envelope or by paying it online using your e-ID account by entering the reference code found on the renewal form (please use this reference code by the expiry date indicated next to it). In exceptional and justified cases, these can be processed over the counter.
