Taxi Driver & Area Knowledge Certificate
The Training Program
Taxi Drivers are required to participate in a training programme and pass the test leading to the Taxi Driver and Area Knowledge Certificate (TDAKC), as explained here.
The TDAKC requirement for Taxi drivers is primarily aimed at improving the skills of taxi drivers and, consequently, road safety. It is intended to promote the professional image of the sector and reducing its environmental impact.
The syllabus for this training program is stipulated in the Third Schedule of the Taxi Services Regulations (S.L.499.59) which also stipulates that the duration of the training pgram shall amount to 46 hours. The list of subjects that shall be covered in this training program:
- Knowledge of vehicle characteristics and safety features;
- Safety of drivers, passengers and other road users;
- Routes and destinations;
- Interpersonal skills; and
- Langauges

Training for Drivers of Wheelchair Accessible Taxis
The Taxi Services Regulations stipulates that drivers of Wheelchair Accessible Taxis shall receive additional training on the operation of such taxis in order to ensure maximum safety for passengers with mobility limitations.
The Tests
In order to obtain the TDAKC drivers are required to sit for and pass the following tests:
Theory Test
The theory test consists of a multiple choice paper with 35 questions and a duration of 45 minutes. The set pass mark is 85% and the test is available in both Maltese and English. This test can currently be booked and done at the Thoery Test Centre.
Practical Test
The practical test shall last 45 minutes during which a driving examiner who will instruct the student to drive a route which shall include at least one prime tourist and one prime commercial location. The student shall demonstrate the ability to:
- Drive the chosen route in full respect of road safety regulations whilst adopting the most effective route;
- Perform a safety check of the vehicle;
- Perform a compliance check of the vehicle; and
- Ability to use the Taximeter and other peripheral equipment.
If 10 or more errors are committed, the applicant will fail the practical test. Any serious or dangerous errors will result in failure notwithstanding the fact that less than 10 errors are accumulated.
