Commercial Vessel Licensing

The  Authority, through its Ports and Yachting Directorate, issues licences in respect of commercial vessels in terms of the Commercial Vessels Regulations (LN 284 of 2002). Any boat used in connection with any trade, business or calling in the territorial waters and internal waters of Malta has to be duly licensed by the Authority.

In terms of the Commercial Vessels Regulations no person may use a vessel for hire or reward unless he is in possession of a Commercial Vessel Operator Licence.  A person shall not be eligible for a licence unless he is an owner of a vessel and can prove that he is of good character or a body corporate established under the Laws of Malta, is competent in providing commercial vessel services, and will ensure due observance of the laws and regulations related to transport by sea within the territorial waters and internal waters of Malta.

The vessels used by the Vessel Operator must be certified in terms of the Regulations and the Code of Practice for the Safety of Commercial Vessels.  The crew to man such vessels will also have to be certified in terms of the Regulations and the Code.
