Mgarr Harbour in Gozo (together with the corresponding Cirkewwa harbour in the north of Malta) is vital for the economic development of this second largest island in the Maltese archipelago. In view of its double insularity, Gozo has to bear the higher cost of transportation since manufacturing companies operating from this island have the cost of the international sea leg and the ferry service between Malta and Gozo. Similarly, the island’s insularity impacts the cost of passenger transport. In view of this, every effort is being made to establish better berthing facilities in order to allow direct access to limited but vital international trade and inter-island ferry services. The three main activities within the port of Mgarr are a mooring facility for fishing and locally owned boats, a yachting centre and berthing facilities for inter-island ferries.
Mgarr Harbour is protected by a breakwater extending NE and another extending SSW from the shore to form an E facing entrance. There is a commercial quay and ferry terminal with two Ro Ro berths in the SW part of the harbour. Pontoons extend from the shore around the remaining part of the harbour, with berths for fishing vessels on the W side and leisure craft to the N.
